Philology is one of the most interesting sciences comprising a number of scientific trends studying our rich cultural heritage reflected both in literary works and in the language culture. Translated from the ancient Greek, philology means love of word.

May 25 is Philologist Day, a holiday celebrated in Ukraine by alumni and faculty of schools of philology, as well as true connoisseurs of spiritual culture and literary works following the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture.

The School of Foreign Language of Karazin University is proud to have enriched the myriad of prominent translators/interpreters, writers, scriptwriters, who have significantly contributed to the School’s cultural heritage. Among them are Associate Professor Tatyana Varenko, author of versed novels in English, whose cross-genre verse novel Elfineness was awarded the silver medal under the Best Science Fiction/Fantasy in the Feathered Quill Book Awards in 2015, and Associate Professor Olesia Malaia, who is a prolific translator of fiction at the Family Leisure Club publishing house with more than 40 novels of German and English authors translated, including works by Wolfgang Hohlbein, John Dickson Carr, Abraham Grace Merritt, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King and Harlan Ellison.

Another famous alumnus of the School of Foreign Language is Illia Plakhuta, who devoted his life to writing and learning foreign languages. In 2014, the world saw his four French textbooks and his novel Cripples. In 2015, Illia Plakhuta had two more of his novels (Black Dog and Sleeping God) published.

Famous journalist-satirist and writer Vitalii Vitaliev is an alumnus of the School of Foreign Language, too. He is also the author of 11 books, and has quite a few literary and publicistic awards, like for instance, his recent achievement of becoming a finalist of the competition PPA Award Observer of the Year 2015.

Philologist Day has long come to many countries to be called an international professional holiday of specialists in different philology-related fields. After all, linguists and literary critics, teachers and lecturers of literature and language, translators, interpreters and librarians, and everyone who has devoted their education and professional career to philology are the elite of the nation.
